"Germs" and "Face" are not two words I ever want to hear together in the same sentence, but as a regular at the gym I have found that I need to be aware of germs otherwise I find my face mysteriously breaking out. Gyms can be grimey - Even the classy expensive ones. And when exercise induced sweat is pouring down my wet face germs might not be the first thing I think of. However most gyms are now equipped with hand sanitizer, germicide spray and paper towels for convenient hygenic practices.
Enter "The 5-Minute Rule" - What I recommend is creating a sanitary environment for yourself on each piece of equipment you will be using for more than 5-minutes, i.e. Treadmill, Elliptical, Stepper, Situp Board, etc. If you're gonna be on it for more than five clean it off with some germicide and paper towels. If it's something you'll be using for less than five like a free weight or a circuit machine wash your hands - Either in the bathroom with soap and water or with the hand sanitizer provided by the gym. Sometimes I even bring my own environmentally friendly non-alcholic non-drying hand spritzer in my purse and use my own. And if you prefer to save the endangered paper-towel trees you can also bring your own terrycloth towel, however it's really best to use a clean towel each time as not to spread the same germs around. It's also a good idea to clean your face before leaving the gym either with a toner spray, sanitary face wipes or with a cleanser and water in the sink.
And the chances are if you're wiping down all your equipment, sanitizing your hands after free weights and washing your hands in between you will certainly reduce the number of bacteria that end up on your face and cause blemishes and breakouts. If you're feeling like maybe you haven't been doing the best job of keeping your face clean from sweat and germs at the gym and it is starting to break you out it's probably a good idea to come in for a facial and let a professional help sanitize the germs for you to give you a fresh clean start.
