Nationwide Tanning Bed Ban for Minors

Click the link below to sign a petition for the Surgeon General of the United States to Urge a Ban on Tanning Bed Use for Minors

SIGN THE PETITION

Dear Surgeon General Benjamin,

On behalf of The Skin Cancer Foundation and its constituents who have signed this letter, we seek your assistance at a critical time in our efforts to protect Americans, especially minors, from the grave risks of indoor tanning. We are asking that you please encourage the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to increase the regulatory requirements for tanning beds through the FDA's medical device reclassification process.

Tanning beds are currently regulated by the FDA as Class I medical devices. This classification is reserved for the lowest risk products such as tongue depressors and gauze pads and is wholly inappropriate for a product that has been designated as a known carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Although the FDA has the authority to appropriately regulate sunlamps used for indoor tanning, and thereby to protect the public from this threat, the Agency has failed to take the steps needed to protect the public.

In March 2010, FDA's Medical Advisory Panel unanimously recommended that the FDA reclassify tanning beds and impose greater control over their manufacture and distribution. More than a year after the advisory committee's recommendation, the FDA has yet to propose a regulation to reclassify tanning beds. FDA's inaction on this issue means that millions of Americans, including minors, continue to be exposed to tanning beds that clearly lack the appropriate level of regulatory oversight.

The research cited by the IARC includes studies showing that first exposure to tanning beds in youth increases melanoma risk by 75 percent. In addition, people who use tanning beds are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma. An estimated 700,000 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common form of skin cancer, are diagnosed each year, resulting in approximately 2,500 deaths. Basal cell carcinomas, the most common form of skin cancer, are rarely fatal, but can be highly disfiguring.

This is especially important because on an average day, more than one million Americans use tanning salons. Seventy-one percent of tanning salon patrons are girls and women aged 16-29. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for young people 15-29 years old.

As long as tanning beds remain class I devices, the FDA is not taking the necessary measures to protect the public, which would include restricting the use of these devices by minors. We hope that your attention to this issue will encourage the FDA to take these steps to protect the public, especially minors, and to reduce the rate of skin cancer and help save lives in the United States.Nationwide Tanning Bed Ban for Minors

Curva Supplement

CURVA™ contains a unique blend of active ingredients designed to assist the body in removing and properly processing fat released during Zerona® treatments. Once releases the fatty material is absorbed by lymphatic vessels and transported to local lymph nodes where the material is released into the circulatory system and then is safely processed by the liver.

Curva has a natural blend of Niacin and Ginko Biloba and is designed to ensure the lymphatic and circulatory systems and the liver are functioning at optimal levels. Ginko Biloba is a beneficial vasodilator that increases blood flow to the treatment area and Niacin is a powerful oxidant that helps support the electron transport chain that is the major photochemical target of the Zerona Treatments. Curva contains other active ingredients such as Green Tea Extract and L-Carnitine to promote a healthy stable immune system and support the transportation of fatty acids into the mitochondria so that fatty acid oxidation can occur.

The Curva Supplement should be used with Zerona Treatments according to Protocol - Take one Curva capsule twice daily prior to meals in the morning and at night and begin taking one week prior to initiating Zerona Treatments. Take Curva throughout the 2-week Zerona procedure and continue taking for one week after Zerona procedure has ended.

EFG

EFG is an acronym for Epidermal Growth Factor which is a naturally occurring protein in the human body. In the scientific community understanding the way that cells grow and reproduce in the body is important and useful in cell growth. EFG has been revealed as a key player in the cell growth and differentiation process and can help us understand developmental diseases such as malformations, senile dementia, tumors and slow wound healing. It may also be applied to helping us obtain more youthful and vibrant skin without plastic surgery or injections like Restylane and Botox.

In 1986 scientists Stanley Cohen and Rita Levi Montalcini were awarded a Nobel Prize for their discovery of EFG and they laid the groundwork for current clinical applications of EFG in helping skin conditions and reversing the sings of aging in humans. Since '86 clinical trials have expanded our knowledge to many new EFG uses - It can be used in areas of the human body damaged in surgery, burns, wounds or accidents and can facilitate changes at the cellular level to revert the damaged cells to a younger version of themselves healing the skin. EFG can also be used to reverse aging within the skin care industry and modern creams containing natural EFG and bioengineered EFG have been found to produce better results on skin than expensive plastic surgery and injections when used twice daily for 4 to 6 weeks. EFG can be found in human platelets, macrophages, urine, saliva, milk and plasma.

Skin cells that have aged can be transformed into youthful vibrant skin cells to give you a more youthful face.

Healthy Foods for Dry Skin

Parched or dry skin is caused by its inability to retain moisture - It usually has a low level of sebum and can be prone to sensitivity. Chapping and cracking are signs of extremely dry or dehydrated skin which can be exacerbated by wind, extreme temperature and air conditioning which cause the skin to flake and feel tight.

There are many products that will help you care for dry skin but here are some recommendations that are more diet based to revive your skin...Hydrating your skin can prevent wrinkles and other signs of premature aging so get to it!

1. Avoid alcohol and caffeine - These substances have a diuretic effect that cause the body and skin cells to lose fluids and essential minerals.

2. Drink at least 2 quarts of *quality water* every day

3. No soft drinks! Do not eat sugar, chocolate or potato chips - These foods are not healthy to consume when you have dry skin. Also try to avoid fried foods, animal fats and heat processed vegetable oils which can produce free radicals.

4. Eat a balanced diet that includes veggies, fruits, grains, seeds and nuts - And increase your intake of healthy raw foods. Consume plenty of yellow and orange colored vegetables as these are high in beta carotene.

5. Garlic, Onions, Eggs and Asparagus are high in Sulfur which keeps the skin smooth and youthful.

6. Eat Fish about 3 times a week - This healthy food has no competition when it comes to antioxidant Omega 3.

Salicylic > Benzoyl Peroxide

There are two primary ingredients we use in skin care to get rid of acne - Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid. In some cases you may have encountered products that use both however many people do not know the benefits of Salicylic Acid or the drawbacks of Benzoyl Peroxide.

The truth about Benzoyl Peroxide is that is dries out your skin. And if you're fighting acne this may sound like a good thing but it leads to irritation. When your skin becomes overly dry it produces more oil to compensate for the dryness and when combined with the dead skin cells on the surface of your skin it can clog pores and actually create more breakouts! An additional issue with Benzoyl Peroxide is that it can cause skin irritations that then increase redness and flaking on your skin and a number of studies have actually linked BP with the creation of free radicals and increased instances of sun damage.

Many skin care professionals believe that the best acne products use Salicylic Acid instead of Benzoyl Peroxide. Acne is not just caused by oil that needs to be dried up on your skin it is also caused by the build up of dead skin cells on the skin's surface - Those dead skin cells then combine with surface oil to clog pores and cause the bacteria that creates acne to multiply.  Instead of treating acne by drying your skin up Salicylic Acid helps to shed the dead skin cells from within the pores themselves before dead skin cells can clog pores ensuring that you have clear pores that can’t be clogged.

Salicylic Acid can take up to four weeks to purge and cleanse your pores so you will want to be patient with the results however in the long term it will keep your skin clear without over drying, irritating and ultimately leading to signs of premature aging.

Precautions for Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a very exciting time in a woman's life and it is important for therapists and clients alike to know about spa safety and take extra precautions because numerous treatments are contraindicated for pregnant women. In general simple soothing facial treatments and the avoidance of any aggressive treatment are appropriate for pregnant women.

Hormone fluctuations due to pregnancy often result in skin changes and pregnant women may experience an increase in oiliness, flares of blemishes and hyperpigmentation and many of these symptoms will disappear after the baby's birth. On the other hand some women experience excellent skin conditions during pregnancy due to hormonal changes and often after pregnancy or after a woman stops breast feeding more changes occur to where a skin care therapist may have to work more extensively with a client after childbirth.

Pregnant women should avoid any type of Electrical Current being applied to the skin - That includes Galvanic, High Frequency, Microcurrent and others. And avoid any form of chemical exfoliation unless it's doctor approved in writing.

During pregnancy many body treatments should also be avoided and only licensed massage therapists who have been specially trained in pregnancy massage should perform this service. Skin Care therapists must pay careful attention to the application of certain essential oils that may be contraindicated during pregnancy.

The Blue Diamond Spa specializes in pregnancy massage and our staff is fully trained to work on pregnant clients - For a spa appointment or to find out more about our services call (310) 577-2211.

Oily Skin Myths

Hey there, "Pizza Face" - Did you know that eating pizza has NOTHING to do with your oily breakouts?! Furthering your understanding of how to keep oiliness under control can help dispel the many myths about oily skin. Here are just a few to get you started...

Myth #1
Oil Can be controlled by stripping your skin with harsh drying ingredients such as alcohol.
Stripping the skin of oil can actually cause an overproduction of oil and those who self treat oily skin with alcohol based products often end up with dehydrated, irritated and sensitized skin.

Myth #2
Sunscreens increase oil production.
Sophisticated new formulations will not clog pores and some even contain oil absorbing micro-sponges for the ultimate in sun protection and skin care benefits - You Skin care therapist can help you find the right oil free sunscreen for you.

Myth #3
A little sun exposure is ideal for drying up oils on the skin.
Sun exposure is NEVER good for skin. While the sun may temporarily provide a “drying” effect sebaceous glands will fire into overdrive to help replace lost oil, which actually results in more oil on the surface than before.

Myth #4
There’s nothing that can be done to help control oily skin.
False - Don’t give up! An oily skin condition is just as manageable as any other skin condition so speak to a professional skin therapist who can analyze your skin and provide a proper diagnosis which will include a regimen of products and lifestyle changes to keep your skin under control.

Dry Brushing

Dry Brushing is a simplistic approach to healthier skin and an important process in helping you to maintain a healthy body. Stimulating your skin can set into motion natural detoxification and healing pathways within your body.

Individuals who sit at a computer all day or those of us with more inactive lifestyle will particularly take pleasure in the benefits of skin brushing - As you increase blood flow to your sore neck, shoulders and lower back you will experience an increase in electromagnetic energy that permits you to feel energized and invigorated.

Many of our clients ask what they can do to improve Cellulite - Dry Brushing (coupled with a healthy diet program and exercise routine) can break down the toxic materials which accumulate in your body's fat cells and are unable to be eliminated causing unwanted Cellulite.

Other benefits of Dry Skin Brushing include:
Lymph Drainage
Improvement in skin texture
Increased Metabolism/Skin Metabolism
Increased circulation & Tightening of the skin
Even distribution of fat deposits
Increased muscle tone
Elimination of clogged pores
Rejuvenated nervous system
If you would like to make an appointment for a body treatment that includes the dry brushing or to purchase a skin brush for home use please contact Blue Diamond Spa at (310) 577-2211.

    Hydrating Skin Savers

Dehydration is a lack of water in skin and can be a precursor to skin sensitization and premature aging including fine lines, redness and irrittion. To keep your skin properly hydrated and protected from premature aging we recommend these 5-Simple Hydrating Skin Savers by Dermalogica as a worthy investment in your skin's health:

    1. Skin Hydrating Booster - Adds hydration to your moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid

    4. Total Eye Care - Vitamin enriched product with SPF is the perfect daytime product and beach essential

    5.  Daily Microfoliant - A rice based exfoliant that maximizes hydration products by gently polishing away dull skin

If you have questions regarding skin hydration or would like to inquire about these Dermalogica products please call the spa at (310) 577-2211 and speak to one of our skincare professionals.

    Cystic Acne

Cystic Acne is the most dreaded form of breakout and can often be very painful. This type of acne usually appears on the cheek, jaw, neck, chest and back and may vary from a tiny sized sore-like cyst formation to a very painful few inches deep within a pore. Once Cystic Acne formations break out the bacteria spreads easily to other pores and areas of the skin causing more infection. They take much longer to heal than the common acne and can often leave unsightly pockmarks and blemishes. Experts have found that heredity plays a crucial factor in a person's chances of developing Cystic Acne however there are other possible causes of this type of acne including Bacteria, Excessive sebum production and grime. Cystic Acne is not easily cured by over-the-counter products and most often requires a visit to the dermatologist for some prescription acne medications and medical extractions.  Light Therapy can be a helpful part of your treatment as well as regular facials, and aftercare with a skin care therapist is also very important for Cystic Acne to prevent scaring and hyperpigmentation.

    Cellulite & Breakouts

Cellulite & Acne Breakouts have two things in common - 1. They are among our most popular treatment requests and 2. They are both negative effects caused by chronic blockages of Lymph.

All things in nature have a natural progression and when this motion is inhibited or jammed up concerns arise. When this occurs in your Lymph System you feel it quickly! Think of a river - A healthy river runs clean and clear but a brackish river chugs along, thick with soot and silt that can get snagged pocketing pollution along the way. Eventually the sluggish river can become a breeding ground for bacteria and disease and the same is true for the lymph in your body.

Because lymph cleanses nearly every cell in your body symptoms of chronic lymph blockage can include various skin breakouts, acne and cellulite in addition to other health problems like allergies and infections, loss of appetite and gastrointestinal issues, muscle cramping, breast tenderness, mood irregularities, fatigue and more. In general you may feel tired and toxic with heaviness in your abdomen.

Stagnant lymph can also interfere with the system's ability to cleanse pore potentially hazardous concerns like cancerous cells from organ tissue, bacteria or other diseases - These infections move through the lymph fluid where they are targeted and destroyed in the lymph nodes when the system is adequate to the task.

Rejuvenating your Lymph System  through Lymphatic Massage, regular detoxes, and other health precautions like physical exercise, deep breathing, adequate water intake, healthy diet, etc. can actually reduce your susceptibility to skin breakouts, acne and even cellulite!

If have concerns about Cellulite or Breakouts and would like to get more information about Lymphatic Massage please call the spa today to schedule an appointment with one of our trained professionals.

    Over-Exfoliation

How much is too much exfoliation?

Exfoliation delivers a tighter, firmer, smoother look and feel of the skin and can reduce breakouts and pore size, but because the results are so noticeable many of us will easily fall into the trap of over-exfoliation.  This over zealous approach can actually reduce your skin's vitality and make it more susceptible to damage from UV light as well as lines and wrinkles. Over-exfoliation can lead to a compromised lipid barrier that increases skin sensitivity and accelerates premature aging.

If your skin is noticeably dehydrated or has patchy areas of dryness, is overly taught, itchy or red, if you have increased sensitivity or inflamed acne or irritation you may be over-exfoliating. In most cases a calming cleanser and toner and a protective moisturizer will start the recovery process for skin healing from over-exfoliation. And as usual sun protection is a must!

After your skin has recovered you can begin exfoliating again with a gentle exfoliant designed for daily use or a more intense non-abrasive chemical exfoliant like Salicylic Acid or Lactic Acid - To enjoy smoother skin without without the undesirable side effects pair a more gentle regimen with professional exfoliation treatments from your professional skin care therapist.

If you're suffering from over-exfoliation and need product help or are interested in booking a series of exfoliating microderm-abrasion treatments or peels please give us a call to schedule your next appointment with one of our highly trained skincare professionals (310) 577-2211.

    Murad Supplements

Topical products can only go so far on their own and are generally only absorbed by the outermost layer of the skin and cannot have much of an effect on a skin condition caused by internal factors - For example deep wrinkles caused by the hormonal changes that occur during Menopause. Certain molecules that are beneficial to the skin such as Collagen are actually too large to penetrate into the skin cells to treat and repair from the surface.

Dr. Murad, a leading Los Angeles dermatologist and pharmacist understands that true skin beauty is only achievable where there is true skin health and true skin health begins at the cellular level. The Murad skincare philosophy is inclusive of both internal and external skin factors using formulas that have been developed using the science of cellular water - Treating your skin with both internal and external formulas is a more powerful way to beautify yourself to get the best possible skin health results you can achieve.

The inside approach to skin healthcare utilizes the right blends of nutrients designed to treat the deeper layers of the skin and the body that cannot be reached through topical skincare products. Taking this principle one step further Dr. Murad developed Internal Skincare® Supplements to help treat specific skin concerns - To name a couple Pure Skin® Clarifying Supplement reduces breakouts by 55% in 6 weeks, Youth Builder® Collagen Supplement diminishes fine lines and wrinkles. For maximum skin health and beauty Murad Internal Skincare helps repair, fortify and protect from the inside out benefitting every complexion with antioxidant vitamins, amino acids and other vital nutrients.

If you are interested in getting more information regarding Internal Skin Care or would like to purchase Murad Supplements please speak directly to one of the Skin Care Therapists at Blue Diamond Spa (310) 577-2211.
